Sit Up and Stretch
Threee reasons why having good posture at your desk will cheange your work life:
#1 Reduce Pain
Sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day is not ideal. Getting up and taking a lap around the office can help relieve some tension and get the blood flowing again, but how do you stop the pain from beginning in the first place? Having your body properly aligned can delay the pain that comes with copious amounts of sitting. Proper posture means having your spine lengthened to the ceiling, shoulders relaxed and having your scapula sliding down towards the floor. If this doesn’t make sense to you, lie your body down on the floor, belly up. The arrangement that you body naturally comes to rest is the shape you should aim for when your body is upright. You don’t want to slouch forward, allowing your back and shoulders to round forward. At the same time, you do not want to go to the extreme and arch your back forward in an extra attempt to “sit up straight”. By arching your back in the sitting position you are overcorrecting your posture and this too can cause deep pain. As a rule of thumb you want you shoulders to align over your hips in a straight line and your head to aline with your pelvis, making a comfortable and sustainable posture.
#2 Increase Productivity
By having your body in good posture, you are making your body more alert and in the mind frame of being ready to work. Nothing is being pinched at a weird angle and your circulatory system and nervous system has a clear path to do its thing. You will also have more space in your frame to allow a big belly breath the comes from your diaphragm versus your chest. These belly breaths calm your heart rate, decrease stress, and allow you to think more clearly and rationally, making you more productive.
#3 You Will Look Better
We all like to be viewed as trim and fit, whether or not we have had time this week to hit the gym or not. Being aware of your posture at your seat will make you appear longer and more streamlined, something we all like! Also, sitting with good posture makes your overall appearance look more confident and present. People will believe that you run the show, even if you are new to the job.
